Dr. Justin Huntington

Desert Research Institute: Research Professor

Justin Huntington is a Research Professor of Hydrology and Remote Sensing at the Desert Research Institute, Reno, Nevada. His research involves a blend of basic and applied science focused on evapotranspiration, water budgets, integrated surface and groundwater modeling, drought, groundwater dependent ecosystems, and open water evaporation. His work is primarily funded by western state water agencies, federal agencies (USGS, Reclamation, NOAA, BLM, NASA), and private industry (Google, environmental consulting firms). A key focus area of his applied work is advancing research to operations and developing decision support tools using new technologies and best available science. He cofounded OpenET and Climate Engine programs, served on the Landsat Science Team from 2012-2023, and has authored over 100 peer reviewed papers, book chapters, and technical reports. Justin received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Hydrologic Sciences from the University of Nevada, Reno.
