The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) provides water planning, data collection and dissemination, and financial and technical assistance to help local and regional water managers sustain the state’s natural resources, economy, and residents’ well-being.
TWDB staff already incorporate ET estimates into much of their research, modeling, and planning activities, including statewide irrigation water use, evaporative demand and drought indices, and groundwater recharge estimates.
The TWDB sees potential for the OpenET platform to improve the accuracy of, and trust in, these current applications. OpenET also enables new uses, such as incorporating ET anomaly maps into drought monitoring reports for higher spatial specificity, giving a clearer picture of where drought stress is most acute.
